Arching data in a company is a task that guarantees the long-term preservation of data. Configuring a suitable backup or archive system requires consideration of several points. Especially security aspects like the physical air gap between tape and network are arguments in favour of a tape based Backup and Archive. This is why this article deals exclusively with an&nbsp;LTO-based backup or archive with P5. It is a basic guideline&nbsp;for the selection of the necessary server hardware.<br><br>Archiware P5 unterst\u00fctzt weitere Speichermedien, wie Cloud, Disk und SSD\/NVME, die an anderer Stelle besprochen werden (s. Einzellaufwerk oder Tape Library?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>F\u00fcr die Beantwortung dieser Frage sind zwei Dinge relevant. Zum einen muss das zu sichernde Datenvolumen ermittelt werden. Also: Wie gro\u00df ist die Datenmenge insgesamt, die t\u00e4glich gesichert bzw. archiviert wird?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Daraus ergibt sich zum anderen die Frage, ob sich die Sicherung dieser Datenmenge mit einem LTO Einzellaufwerk praktikabel durchf\u00fchren l\u00e4sst, oder ob daf\u00fcr eine LTO Tape Library mit integriertem Bandwechsler sinnvoller ist. Generell ist eine LTO Tape Library immer dann erforderlich, wenn zum Zeitpunkt eines notwendigen Bandwechsels kein\/e Mitarbeiter\/in in der N\u00e4he ist, um diese Aufgabe manuell zu erledigen. Bei der Langzeitarchivierung macht es besonders Sinn weiteres Datenwachstum schon bei der Einrichtung zu ber\u00fccksichtigen, was wiederum f\u00fcr eine Tape Library spricht. Teilweise sind diese auch mit sp\u00e4ter erweiterbarer Kapazit\u00e4t erh\u00e4ltlich, da der Planungshorizont mehrere Jahre betr\u00e4gt.<br>Die Zugriffsh\u00e4ufigkeit auf das Archiv ist ebenfalls von Bedeutung, da ggf. das ben\u00f6tigte Tape f\u00fcr den Restore in das Einzellaufwerk eingelegt werden muss, was bei einer Tape Library entf\u00e4llt.<br><br>Um die Datensicherheit eines Archivs zu erh\u00f6hen, kann man mit einem zweiten Laufwerk direkt beim Archivierungsvorgang die Daten zweifach schreiben (klonen). Dadurch kann nach der Archivierung der zweite Mediensatz au\u00dferhalb des Unternehmens aufbewahrt werden. Diese Auslagerung von LTO Tapes sorgt f\u00fcr maximale Sicherheit im Falle lokaler Unf\u00e4lle oder Sch\u00e4den.<br><br>Mehrere Laufwerke haben ausserdem den Vorteil, dass mehrere Jobs gleichzeitig bearbeitet werden k\u00f6nnen, z.B. ein laufendes Backup und ein Restore aus dem Archiv. Anschluss \u2013 SAS, Fibre Channel oder Thunderbolt?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Three interfaces are available for LTO single drives and libraries: SAS (Serial Attached SCSI), Fibre Channel and Thunderbolt. The&nbsp;SAS interface&nbsp;is the&nbsp;cheapest but limits the distance between the drive and the computer to 1-2 meters.<br><br>Devices with&nbsp;Fibre Channel&nbsp;are more costly but can connect over distances of up to kilometers.&nbsp;Thunderbolt&nbsp;is mostly used on the Mac to connect peripherals like displays and disks. In most environments SAS is fully sufficient. Bridges from SAS to Thunderbolt are available to connect these drives to Mac or PC with Thunderbolt. Multiple vendors offer LTO drives with Thunderbolt interfaces. There are also products with two drives in one enclosure to write two identical\/cloned the tapes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Welches Betriebssystem?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We will not attempt to answer the question of the right operating system at this point. Apart from personal preferences and specifications in companies, which help to determine a suitable&nbsp;choice, each operating system offers advantages and disadvantages. Since Archiware&nbsp;P5 supports all relevant operating systems, the decision can be made according to the company\u2019s&nbsp;specifications or hardware and software requirements. From Archiware\u2019s point of view, which is admittedly rather technical, Linux is recommended. Linux is easy on resources and can be&nbsp;adapted very well to changing requirements. Another advantage is the fact that it is free of charge. In addition, with regard to P5, the requirements for the administration of the operating system are&nbsp;very low. Apart from the installation of P5, virtually no further adjustments have to be made in the operating system. Archiware P5 offers easy migration of the installation and indexes between OS platforms when the need for a change arises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Hardware - gibt es besondere Systemanforderungen?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In principle, P5 has very low server hardware requirements. The hardware requirements grow with the tasks. The greater the necessary&nbsp;data throughput, i.e., the amount of data that must&nbsp;be backed up or restored in a given time, the more powerful the hardware must be.<br><br>Wenn z.B. in der Nacht innerhalb von 8 Stunden 5 Terabyte gesichert werden m\u00fcssen, ben\u00f6tigt man ein System, das ca. 200MB\/sec schreibt und auch 200MB\/sec liest. Ein lokales RAID das am gleichen Server angeschlossen ist, sollte das leisten k\u00f6nnen. Wenn man aber die Daten verteilt auf mehrere Server liegen, die nur per Netzwerkerreichbar sind, ben\u00f6tig man schon minimal ein 2,5 Gbit Netzwerk, um entsprechend schnell die Daten auf dem Backup-Server zu transferieren. Aus der Perspektive von P5 ist eine schnelle SSD Platte ein gro\u00dfer Vorteil, da die Indizierung viel performanter ist, als mit einer herk\u00f6mmlichen Disk.<br><br>A dedicated backup\/archive server on the network should have a minimum of 4 cores, 16 GB RAM and an SSD disk by today\u2019s standards. If multiple jobs need to be processes by P5 each job requires one core.
