Power down vm before backup

I was previously using the GettoVCB scripts to do my VM backups and it has an option to power down a VM before backups and then power it back on after it completed;  I was using this for my mail server.

On some databases, it is an advantage to do a power down to keep consistency on the database, i.e. Mail server, heavily loaded MySQL, etc.  Could this be a future option?

Thanks,

Doug

I will forward your suggestion to the development team but as far as I know, such feature is not planned. But since Pure supports snapshot quiescing, you should be able to achieve consistent backups without powering off the VMs. The prerequisite is that you install VMware tools and that VM is running either Windows or Linux OS.

If Pure detects VMware tools are installed, it will always attempt to use snapshot quiescing first, reverting to a crash consistent snapshot only if the above fails. Using quiesced snapshot allow you to configure custom scripts to be executed immediately before and after snapshot creation allowing you to perform any necessary tasks such as flushing all database writes to disk. You can find example scripts for the most common databases online.

On Linux, scripts must be placed in:

/usr/sbin/pre-freeze-script

/usr/sbin/post-thaw-script

Don't forget to change owner to root and permissions to 0700

Detailed instructions for Windows can be found in this KB article: https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/1006671

I use Pre and Post scripts on my Linux machines, but wasn't aware it was available for Windows.

Now I need to read up on it!

Thanks
